ATS-friendly resumes: what the parser actually sees
Most mid-size and large employers run applications through an applicant tracking system before a human looks at them. The ATS parses your file into structured fields — name, employers, dates, skills. When parsing fails, the recruiter sees a half-empty profile, and rejection follows without anyone reading the real document.
What breaks parsing
Tables and text columns — parsers read left-to-right and scramble two-column layouts;
headers/footers — contact details placed there are often skipped entirely;
graphics, icons, skill "meters" — invisible to the parser, and they displace text that would have carried keywords;
creative headings — "My journey" instead of "Experience" fails section detection;
photos — ignored at best, а in the US often a compliance red flag.
What parses cleanly
One column. Standard headings (Summary, Experience, Education, Skills). Reverse-chronological jobs as "Role — Company — Dates". Plain bullet points. Standard fonts. Dates in a consistent format ("2022–2025" or "Mar 2022 – Jan 2025"). Both .docx and PDF are fine with modern systems — what matters is that the PDF contains real text, not a scan or an export full of text boxes.
Keywords without stuffing
ATS ranking (and the recruiter's search inside the ATS) matches terms from the job posting. Mirror the posting's exact vocabulary for skills you genuinely have — if they write "customer relationship management (CRM)", have both the phrase and the acronym somewhere. White-text keyword stuffing is detected by modern systems and torpedoes trust when the human compares the resume to reality.

Should I submit PDF or Word to an ATS?
Follow the posting's instructions first. Absent instructions, a text-based PDF preserves formatting and parses fine in modern systems; .docx is the safest fallback for older ones.
Do two-column resumes always fail ATS?
Not always — but often enough that it is a pointless risk. A clean one-column layout parses everywhere and still looks professional to humans.
